What Is the Definition of POV on Social Media?

POV stands for ‘Point Of View’, and people use this popular acronym in their videos, stories, and captions on social media platforms.

Before we go any further, let me tell you something: It doesn’t matter whether you use POV on Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, or other apps; the meaning remains the same.

Whenever you see POV in content, it means that the video is talking on behalf of the viewer as if they were in the same situation.

If you want to share a video about a situation or experience that you are sure most people have been in, you can start a sentence using POV, so your audiences will feel more connected to your content.

If you are thinking of sharing a fun video about you hanging out with your friends, and as you know, we all lose our minds and stop using our brains when we are around our best friends, you can create a video using this sentence: ‘POV: my friends and I don’t need our brains when we are together.’

POV as first-person

People mainly use POV as the first-person in their videos to share a story about something they experienced.

For example, someone is living in a fancy penthouse in NYC and wants to share a video of their home, they can say: POV: I am living in a penthouse in New York City!

Another example could be a mom with three lovely kids who want to share a video about her home after she returns from work. She can say: POV: I’m a mom with three kids and a full-time job.

POV as third-person

Using POV as a third person is not quite popular on social media platforms; however, I want you to know that it is mainly used in books or stories.

If you are interested in reading books or stories, you know that writers usually talk from the third-person point of view.

Check this example out: ‘He was so into books, so he used his pocket money to buy one; however, he would be starving at school for about a week.’

As you can see, the writer uses pronouns such as he, she, and they to discuss things from their perspectives.

Thus, you can use third-person POV to describe a similar situation in your Instagram Reels or TikTok videos.

What are examples of POV videos on social media?

If you want to create more engaging content, you better start using POV in your videos, and I can assure you that the results will surprise you.

Let’s see some examples of how to use POV on social media:

To talk about a memory of school or childhood

some friends talking about memories

We all have some similar experiences related to school or our childhood; for example, we all were afraid of our first day or had a crush on the bullied guy!

Therefore, these are usually great ideas for creating engaging ideas; now imagine how using a related sentence started with POV can help your video go viral.

  • POV: It’s 2005, and you just entered your first class at school.
  • POV: You just got out of school and are playing Super Mario on the bus school.
  • POV: You haven’t done your homework, your teacher forgot, and suddenly that ONE kid asks your teacher: Aren’t you going to check our papers?

To talk about a popular piece of movie, music, or story

Most of us share a similar memory or opinion about popular movies, stories, and music, so they are in the engaging category to create a video about them and use POV to talk about your point of view and ask your audience about their thoughts on it.

  • POV: When you meet ‘Voldemort’ in real life! (You can use it on a video when you see someone that looks like Voldemort from the Harry Potter movie.)
  • POV: You are listening to Taylor Swift’s recent album and suddenly want to break up with your boyfriend!
  • POV: Your dad is telling you vampire stories so you can sleep better!

To talk about fun facts or bad habits

I can tell you that we all have some similar bad habits that we try so hard to hide, but you won’t make it, not when you are scrolling Instagram or TikTok because someone is going to make a video about it, and your friend will send it to you out of nowhere.

Besides, we all know some fun facts about our friends or siblings, which means when we see a video that starts with POV and tells the fun fact we know about them, we will definitely send it to them.

  • POV: Seeing my friend at MacDonald’s, however, we said we were both on a diet!
  • POV: How I cut people off from my life the second they disagree with me.
  • POV: My sister on her way to tell my mom the secret she swears she won’t tell anyone.

As you can see, there are various situations in which you can use POV to share your point of view or opinion about something; however, to create more engaging content, it is better to use POV in content where you know a lot of people share similar opinions or experiences.

Is POV a Synonym for IMO?

a girl checking her social media

Well, it can, but not always and necessarily! As you may know, my friend, ‘IMO’ stands for In My Opinion, which is used to present someone’s opinion about a subject, not just their viewpoint,

Although they may share the same meaning in a text context, using IMO instead of POV in a TikTok or Instagram video probably kills the sense of the true point of your content.

It is better to use IMO only when you want to share your thoughts or opinion about something, and not describe a situation you were in once.

Finally, it is good to know that IMO and POV are not interchangeable on any social media platforms.

Conclusion

Now that we are in the last chapter of the story of the slang ‘POV,’ I want to remind you to think of a subject that you experienced once and are sure that there are people out there who were in that situation. Then, create a video using POV to tell a story to your friends and followers.

Believe me, if you want to get better results from your videos on TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram, you should start using this POV trend to stay ahead of your competitors.
