There was a time in internet history which saw Tumblr reign as king of online content. From niche interests to TV discussion clubs, Tumblr was the ultimate spot for fans of all niches to flock together and bond over a common love. As well as providing a meeting spot, Tumblr also became a space for ultimate digital expression, allowing you to carefully craft a profile which allowed you to embody whomever you wanted to be.
As the internet expanded and technology developed, new sites emerged, and trends and fashions rose and fell. We saw the loss of MSN and the rise of WhatsApp, the death of MySpace in favor of Facebook, and traditional photo sharing sites such as Flickr have been superseded by the mighty Instagram. This raises the question: in the 2021 digital space, is Tumblr dead? We’ll explore this question below.
What Is Tumblr?
“Express yourself. Be yourself. Connect with other people.” The tagline of Tumblr offers clear insight into their overall goals and intentions: this is a place for people to connect, to celebrate their interests, and to take the chance to truly enjoy and celebrate their own authentic, unique selves.

See Available Accounts →In the simplest terms, Tumblr is a site designed for sharing. A strange hybrid, it offers an interesting combination of social networking and blogging, creating a unique new breed of social media platform which takes the most popular aspects of the popular sites dominating the digital realm, and offers them in a single space.
Users can post material such as GIFs, photos, videos, artwork and text, from a number of devices. The purpose is not fixed — you can discuss your latest poetic inspiration with like-minded literature fans, enjoy videos of your favorite band, or simply share hilarious cat memes. Ideas can be updated and discussed in real time, keeping conversations current, relevant, and fresh.
What Are The Benefits?
One of the major appeals of the site is flexibility. as users can post a variety of texts, music, and photos as well as videos and nostalgic or inspiring quotes — almost a throwback to the glory days of changing your MSN name to deep and profound song lyrics. Unlike angsty teenage vibes however, Tumblr remains fresh and relevant by offering bloggers and influencers a chance to post short, stream of consciousness updates live, which is very important in a world where things move at the speed of light, and offering an opportunity to share thoughts, moods, feelings, and opinions in more depth than the character limits of Twitter
Who Is The Target Demographic?
According to Business Insider, almost half of the users of Tumblr were aged between 16-24; a demographic notoriously tricky to reach. The key aspect here is engagement — the same research shows that Tumblr users tend to spend longer creating and engaging with content on the site, compared with other offerings such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
This increased engagement is likely to be due to the nature of the platform; crafting microblogs or sharing artwork may result in a deeper, more meaningful connection which is missing in the “post and go” nature of many other social networking sites. This in turn generates a fierce loyalty, attested to by the high number of users still actively engaging with the site in 2021.
So, Is Tumblr Dead?
All of this information begs the question: is Tumblr dead? First, let’s look at the stats. According to the figures, the site currently hosts a total of 420 million users, and supports over 512.5 million blogs. The numbers are impressive, especially for a site which has been kicking around since early 2007. The site was also purchased by Yahoo in 2013 for an eye-watering $1.1 billion; a hefty price tag for a site over a decade old. It’s clear that those in the know perceive value in the business model.
The unique nature of Tumblr means that it still has a place in the crowded market of social media. In many ways, it represents an amalgamation of a number of different site types and purposes, functioning as a social network platform, photo sharing space, collaborative zone, and microblog. This freedom is unlikely to fall out of favor, and will likely be the key in allowing Tumblr to survive and thrive for years to come. So overall, it can be seen that although there are many other platforms for content sharing, Tumblr is far from dead, and continues to thrive and expand in its own unique ways.
